BUYING FIREWORKS

Frequently asked questions about buying and letting off fireworks

CAN I BUY FIREWORKS ANY TIME OF THE YEAR?

Yes, and fireworks are increasingly popular throughout the year for weddings, birthdays and even at summer evening barbecues. Remember that demand is high on Nov 5th and New Year approaches so order early. You can order from our website 365 days a year.

HOW DO I KNOW MY FIREWORKS ARE SAFE?

All of our fireworks conform to CE & BS 7114 Part 2: 1988 the quality standard for fireworks in the UK. Beware of fireworks from untrustworthy sources.

CAN I LET MY FIREWORKS OFF AT ANY TIME?

Yes, with certain limitations – Fireworks are not allowed after 11.00pm (or earlier than 7.00am) except on Bonfire Night (midnight), Diwali, New Year, and Chinese New Year (1 am).

IS MY GARDEN BIG ENOUGH?

Depending on what fireworks you buy depends on the safety distance. CAT2 fireworks have a safety distance of 8M which is suitable for most small gardens were as CAT3 fireworks require 25M safety distance which is better suited to medium to larger sized gardens.

DO I NEED A LICENCE OR PERMISSION?

No. A private display needs no formalities unless you live in Northern Ireland where you will need to buy a local authority licence. If you are putting on a public display, or are charging for entry then you should follow all the published guidelines for an organised event.

CAN I BUY PROFESSIONAL FIREWORKS?

Cat 3 fireworks are used in professional displays but Cat 4 can only be purchased and used by properly accredited professional firework display companies.

We do sell professional Cat 4 fireworks on our wholesale website but to be able to purchase you must go through safety checks and provide the correct licences and certificates.

DO I NEED FIREWORK INSURANCE?

Most good household policies will cover the risks associated with domestic fireworks. If in doubt, check with your insurance company. You will definitely need special coverage if you run a public event – see insurance for more details.

WHAT IF THE WEATHER IS POOR?

Bad weather need not affect your fireworks display, but it might limit the enjoyment of your spectators! Most fireworks can be protected against rain with polythene bags or clingfilm.
Leave it as late as possible before you set them out. Strong wind is a major consideration though in cancelling your fireworks.

You should not ignite anything (including the bonfire!) if there is a risk of burning debris being blown in an unwanted direction.

BANGERS, AIR BOMBS AND JUMPING JACKS?

Many types of fireworks which adults remember from their own childhood are no longer available either by law or by a voluntary agreement within the fireworks industry.

This includes bangers and, as a general rule, fireworks of erratic flight.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

Fireworks legislation is not coordinated across the EU. You may be offered fireworks bought abroad with no CE or UK BS7114 accreditation.
These fireworks are illegal to buy, sell or use.

FIREWORK SETUP AND INFORMATION

Frequently asked questions about different fireworks and how to set them up.

DO I HAVE TO REMOVE THE CLEAR FILM ON TOP?

The Quick answer is no you do not need to remove the transparent plastic film on the top of your fireworks. This film will not affect the fireworks performance and is merely a thin layer of protection to stop the contents of the fireworks being damaged.

WHATS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 13G & 1.4 G

The difference between 1.4g and 1.3g is the percentage of flash powder in the fireworks. 1.4g fireworks will have less than 5% flash powder and 1.3g has more than 5% flash powder. More flash means bigger bursts more bang and more volatility so you need to be careful when storing and shipping.
It is more expensive to ship 1.3g containers from China than 1.4g. If you are storing 1.4g fireworks and add one small 1.3g firework to it, the whole lot is then classed as 1.3g so be aware of what you are storing.

WHAT DOES THE CATEGORY OF FIREWORKS MEAN?

F1 or Category 1 fireworks are the likes of sparklers, party poppers and Christmas crackers.
F2 or Category 2 fireworks are generally garden fireworks that can be used safely in a garden that is 5 – 8m or 16ft to 25ft.

F3 or Category 3 fireworks have more flash powder inside meaning they are much more powerful. These will be much louder with bigger bursts in the sky. The safety distance can be as much as 25m or 80ft to you and me.

F4 or Category 4 fireworks are for professional use only so not for sale to the public.

HOW DO I SETUP COMPOUND FIREWORKS?

Compound fireworks are easy to set up and takes less than a minute.

  • First, remove the cardboard lid from the firework. You can do this just by cutting the tape on each side which holds the lid in place.
  • Secondly, take a close look at the labels on the top of the cakes you will see they are labelled PART ONE, PART TWO, PART THREE or PART FOUR.
  • Make Sure PART ONE is facing the crowd, and PART THREE or FOUR is Furthest away from the crowd.
(you can view an image of the setup image here for reference)
  • Finally, tear back the orange label on PART ONE called FUSE. This will then expose the fuse ready to be lit when you are ready.
  • Compound fireworks sit on a wooden base and are pretty stable already but for extra security. You can place bricks around the edge of the fireworks or use a wooden stake and duct tape around them.
